Publishing a Directory on the Web

The Question

Suppose you want to publish a directory tree on the web, so that it may look and function like, e.g. HTML-front-ended FTP site, such as https://archive.debian.org/. How to do this?

Some use cases:

• Jekyll-based Gitlab pages prevent such a directory listing, although local Jekyll server doesn't prohibit such. Perhaps for security reason to prevent automated crawling and harvesting.
